Associate Professor Transitions to Sustainable Mobility – Eindhoven University of Technology

Exploring the rapid uptake of battery-as-a-service (BaaS) in Nairobi, Kenya, Frauke Behrendt asks what European cities and companies can learn from this innovation. The recent electrification of two-wheelers – both e-bicycles and motorbikes – in Sub-Saharan Africa is increasingly accompanied by battery swapping stations across cities. There, riders swap batteries, while data on riders, cargo, trips, battery status, etc inform new business models.

In this keynote, Behrendt explores the implications for cities and cargo bikes through the analytical lens of mobility data justice, combined with a long-term perspective of innovative bicycle use for cargo across Africa.

Bio – Frauke Behrendt

Frauke Behrendt is Associate Professor in Transitions to Sustainable Mobility at Eindhoven University of Technology (NL), with previous appointments in the United Kingdom and the US. Her interdisciplinary research connects sustainable mobility, digital society and social justice perspectives. She explores how we can move towards radically more sustainable and just mobilities, especially considering the role of active and micromobility, data/AI, and ‘beyond-car’ electric mobility in (urban) transitions – in Europe and the Global South. She enjoys leading interdisciplinary research teams and projects, enabled by national and international funders.Amongst others, she led the UK-based ELEVATE project that involved cargo-bike trials, a project with PostNL on Light Electric Vehicles, and one on micromobility in the Netherlands.
